How To Pack A Surf Board To Travel

Prevention is better than cure, so to save you the stress and worry about your boards care givers and getting any dings. We have come up with a few tips on how to pack the precious cargo.

  1. Firstly every airline is different with their own set of rules & regulations so before you book an air ticket, check the airline policy on travelling with a board. (Or just ask us, we know it all)
  2. Be knowledgeable about what board you should take with, do you know what kind of surf it is? Those kinds of things. Last thing we would want is for you to land up on a beautiful island with the wrong kind of board.
  3. Your best bet and to increase the odds of ding-free travel, consider how many boards you will be travelling with on this trip and any trip in the future and buy a board bag.

  1. Remove the fins and keep them close, wrap them up with your board along with the key (DON’T FOGET THE KEY). If you have glass in fins, you have two options on packaging it – firstly you can bubble wrap them individually or you can purchase a foam box for them, to maximise protection.

  1. Keep it clean and remove the wax, this is to ensure that when you land in the tropics your cold wax doesn’t melt off onto anything else.

  1. Foam pipe installation which is available at most hard ware stores (or you could just get a pool noodle) all you have to do is, cut a slit down one side of the pipe insulation and secure the insulation to the railings with duct tape or plastic wrap.

  1. Protect the nose & tail, by taping items that you’re already traveling with – wet-suits, towels, and clothes around the board. To save on space and for ultimate protection. Alternatively you can bubble wrap it as well as use the installation piping.
  2. Add another layer of protection and bubble wrap it!
  3. Pack your boards correctly, the bigger boards at the bottom with all boards facing the same direction and the rockers running the same way! If the fins aren’t removable, place each board nose to tail all deck up, to even out the bulge from the fins and fin blocks on each side of the bag – Then strap them all together.
  4. Put the protected board in its board bag and throw some extra clothing for padding. To make it extra clear write fragile on the bag to ensure your board has the best care.
