REUNION Surf information

The west coast of the island offers some of the best waves in the Indian Ocean and due to its perfect latitude, it receives consistent swells and great tropical weather.
Most of the thirty reported surf spots on the west coast, break on fragmented barrier reefs, quite a distance from the beach. There are also a few average black sand beach breaks, as well as the popular white sand sunbathing beaches of Roches Noires and Boucan.

The surf zone starts in the north at the unsightly Possession Harbor. The first spot here is a big wave break called Le Port. Rarely ridden and hard to find, it has a nasty shark factor.

In St-Gilles there are about 17 breaks scattered over a 12km of coastline.

The first cooking set up is at Boucan, with lefts and rights while Roches Noires has many good spots, ideal for beginners.

Further down the coast at the natural lagoon reserve at Le Hermitage Pass, surfers have the choice between an epic left and a barreling right. Both are sharky, work on small swells and need rare northerly winds.

The Trois-Bassins area is a swell magnet, having waves when everywhere else is flat.

St-Leu, the famous left, provides a true world class wave with an easy paddle out. It starts with a long and easy wall, ideal for turns, before a bowly hollow section which throws out a shallow tube and then finishes close to shore.

Le Etang-Sale is the windsurfer's equivalent of St-Leu, due to a high south east wind exposure.

The south-east coast around St-Pierre is very consistent, with the majority of waves being rights, such as the scary Pic du Diable and La Jetee big wave spot.

There are good right point breaks on the southern and eastern coasts, but it is sharky. There have been attacks here, and surfing is not advised.

Best time to avoid Reunion is January to March as this is the peak season for cyclones.
