SOUTH SUMATRA Surf information
Swell & consistency
It's a year round venue but best from March until October. There are some good very uncrowded waves between November up until February too.
Winds
Winds are light in the morning and often all day and come from the south west. However, the point is one of a few waves that can handle a south westerly and is cross off shore. A few other waves (most of the lefts) are also off shore and protected, but the beachies and rights need to be surfed early or on glassy days.
Reef
Most waves break on coral reef and therefore reef boots and helmets are recommended! Sea urchins are around, so watch out.
Crowds
The main surf season has consistently good waves and the area is a swell magnet so this tends to be the busiest time of year. However, even if there are 10 to 20 guys max at the point which is very rare, usually small groups of surfers surf at different times - so crowds aren't usually an issue. Often early mornings go unsurfed but bare in mind that the area offers many other empty waves to surf that are very close by and easily accessible. In the off-season the waves are only surfed by small pockets of surfers.
The Main Breaks
Ujung Bocor (Karang Nyimbor)
This breaks for a good 200 meters, and is a classic wave. The furtherest outside corner produces the heaviest section, where a decent barrel can be had. Beyond this section is 100 meters of fun feathering lips, ideal for practicing various top turns and round houses. The end section will offer a closeout for a move. The wave breaks on all tides and is shallower and hollower at low tide.

Way Jambu
Way Jambu or the "Sumatran Pipeline" is one of the most perfect waves around. Big hollow barrels and for experienced riders only! It's just 15 minutes drive from the camp.
Mandiri
This quality beach break can be compared to those sick French beachies and is about a 20 minute drive away.
Bali Village
On its day, this left and right breaking wave is a must visit. Again about 20 minute drive.
Krui Left & Right.
A quality bowly left hander that needs a bit of swell to start to work. Krui Left is a 40 minute drive.
Meanwhile, the nearby Krui Right is a superb righthander, one of the best in the area but needs a bit of swell to start to work.
Jenny's (Drews) Right
Breaking for approximately 100 meters, this right breaking wave offers a bit of everything - from decent barrel sections to big open faces.
It is uncrowded and often not surfed – accommodation available right there.
Jimmy's Left -
Just 10 minutes from Jennys, this world class left hander produces endless barrels.
Jimmy's Right
A stones throw away from Jimmy's left but nothing like it. If you want heavy sucking bottom out barrels then this could be the one if the swell and winds are right!
There are many other beachies and reefs around. Let us take you there, and we will tell you more! |
