SOUTH WEST COAST Surf information

WAVES ON THE SW COAST OF MADAGASCAR/TULEAR AREA

The South West Coast of Madagascar is riddled with perfect reef and point set ups. What has kept these waves secret and mostly unridden, is the harsh coastline and the fact that the waves break mostly on the off shore reefs, often more than 2 kilometres out to sea. True Blue have been pioneers here, scouting these reefs by catamaran in the late 1990’s and helping set up the first commercial charter operation in the Tulear area. Since then a Resort has been established which makes life and getting to surf easier; by utilising motorised surf cruisers and local guides to waves.

Generally there is no wind every morning, and then it may blow cross-shore later or may stay glassy. There are almost no local surfers and only the occasional feral surfer or yachts passing by. The surf is very hard to get to and hiring boats and buying fuel are super expensive plus the tide and wind play a big part. That is why a local guide and good boat is 100% necessary to catch the waves when and where they are happening.

Some waves still work in strong daily cross-shore winds (Flameballs), but generally, you can get in 2 good surfs each morning before any winds pick up.

Flameballs- Cooking, long, hollow lefthander – world class!

Jellybabies- A left and right A frame peak which is fun and rippable with a small barrel section on low tide. It is great for surfing and kiting as it is very consistent
Pirogues-A left reef across the channel from Jellies (100m)It does need a west swell or some size, but will break when Jellies is breaking. It may be smaller and is super fun for long boarders and kiting but can cook when bigger

Indicators – Outside of Pirogues (left point / reef sections)

Crustys – A barrelling right point / reef that works in the morning off shores or north winds, with medium to big swell. It is best at high tide

Resorts- These are the reefs in front of resort and only when there is big swell

Puss Puss – A right reef break up coast that picks up a lot of swell and is surfed when very small

The Resort is based in an established Dive Resort; but offers the services of a LOCAL or WESTERN surf guide and a 25ft surf cruiser to all the breaks - which are 20 – 45 min away and often 1 – 4 km off shore.

You are guaranteed that no more than 8 (unless you have requested more) surfers will be part of this set up. Generally there may be a few travelling surfers in the area, as well as a couple of locals. Most of them only surf Jellies, and you may sometimes come across them at other breaks.

So enjoy this new and amazing adventure and take along good vibes and positive thoughts to this land of untamed spirits and untouched surf.
