Information
Antananarivo the capital, often abbreviated to Tana, has a distinctively French flavor and atmosphere: French is widely spoken, and shop signs are mostly in French. The city is built on three levels. Dominating the city is the Queen?s Palace and associated Royal Village or Rova. Driving in from the airport, the views over the surrounding rice paddies, up to the city on the hill is quite mesmerising and amazing.
The birthplace of the Malagasy state, Ambohimanga is 20km from the capital. Known variously as ?the blue city?, ?the holy city? and ?the forbidden city?, it is surrounded by forests.
In Madagascar eating well means eating a lot. Malagasy cooking is based on a large serving of rice with a dressing of sauces, meat, vegetables and seasoning. The people of Madagascar enjoy very hot food and often serve dishes with hot peppers. Tana offers many eclectic, local and western restaurants.
There are a few discos, sometimes with bands and solo musicians. Casinos can be found at Antananarivo, Toamasina and on Nosey B?. Traditional dance troupes can also be seen.
Antananar?vo is situated in the center of the island length-wise, and 90 miles away from the eastern coast. The city occupies a commanding position, being built on the summit and slopes of a long and narrow rocky ridge, which extends north and south for about 2? miles. Most visitors will pass through the city as it is located very close to the countries international airport. Antananarivo is a great city to explore by foot; enjoy the markets, the people, the cobbled streets and the vibrant mix of a fantastic yet crazy experience.
